about

DREAM_121

“As the glowing haze of the 1990’s fades further into obscurity, some nights we can still feel ourselves being pulled back into the arms of innocence. Soaring between the towers of the Dream City skyline, like some sort of 32-bit Peter Pan, we relive the dreams of youth before the dawn once again calls us back home.”

While most Dream Catalogue fans will know of HCMJ for being the brains behind death’s dynamic shroud.wmv, some don’t know yet that the Philadelphia-based artist has a rich history of musical projects dating back over a decade, in which he has explored various styles of music.

One such project was Winter Sleep, created as a dedication to and rediscovery of the video game soundtracks that lit up his youth – in particular the game “Nights Into Dreams”. In HCMJ’s words, with Winter Sleep: “I attempted to impress the awe I felt playing Nights as a kid onto the music – to capture the innocence encapsulated in that childlike wonder that slowly erodes into the cynicism of adulthood. I developed title themes, menu loops, level music, boss battles, logo jingles, cutscene music – all the elements of video game soundtracks reduced to compositional forms.” This was a project of pure inspiration and dedication, written and recorded over a three-month period and then given a release on the now-defunct chiptune label Pause, which also housed early works from the likes of Giant Claw and Disasterpeace.

Ironically at the time, and unknown to the artist during the creation of this album, vaporwave was also rising in popularity – in which soundtracks from the video games that inspired the creation of this album were being ripped, slowed down and re-presented in a new fashion. Very much a far cry from the intentions of his Winter Sleep project, and as he puts it: “Winter Sleep was an adult recounting memories of feelings from the past, not a new generation digging through the media ruins of a near history.”

And this divergence in HCMJ’s approach to Winter Sleep and the vaporwave that was coming out at the time is important to note, because the difference is ultimately what inspired HCMJ and his death.wmv band-mates to begin their venture into what would become known as NUWRLD.

Ultimately, this album is a dedication to the power of music, and especially the power of the music that shapes our minds during childhood. As its title suggests, it is the music of dreams – in this case, the innocent and playful dreams of youth. And while this album may have gone under the radar for some time, we think it’s a huge part of HCMJ’s back catalogue that deserves a new spotlight – just as he intended to cast a spotlight on the music that inspired him to write ‘Dreams’ in the first place.
